A visit to our museum is a must when visiting Lappo. Here you will find one of the most extensive collections of wooden boats in the Baltic Sea.

You can’t imagine life in the archipelago without boats. In the archipelago boats are, and have always been, a part of daily life. However, times are changing. In times gone by all boats would have been powered by oars and sails, whether for fishing trips of leisurely trips into town. On the piers of Finnvik you could see all kinds of wooden boats, from the smallest ‘roddsump’ to the large galeas. What all the boats had in common, though, is that they were built with knowledge and care and to this day remain beautiful to the eye and good to handle.

The Archipelago Museum in Lappo showcases the traditional Åland archipelago and fishing culture. On display are boats which were built for all kinds of uses: for fishing and hunting, for trips to the market, for delivering the mail, and for trips to islets to milk the cows. Within the unique collection are about ten rustic wooden boats – among them the last remaining boat of a type called ‘Storbåt’. A permanent photo exhibition shows historical images of life in the village.

In connection with the museum is a smithy, restored to its original state, which contains a folk museum with a collection of historical utility objects.
